The southern geographical location, the steepness of the land and the ideal weather, make Ushuaia a privileged place for practicing winter sports. Undoubtedly, Ushuaia has the longest winter sport season in the southern hemisphere, spanning from the end of June to mid-September.
The geography of Tierra del Fuego, with its steep mountains and deep valleys, provides the ideal setting for the practice of several winter activities for amateurs and beginners, and for experts, for example, downhill and cross-country skiing, and snowboard on Mount Castor, snow cat, dog sleds, trekking with snow rackets in the winter resorts that are in Tierra Mayor Valley, among which stand out: Altos del Valle, Haruwen, Solares del Bosque, Tierra Mayor, Nunatak, La Cotorra and Valle Hermoso, to name a few.
Every year, the city hosts numerous winter events, out of which stand out the “Marcha Blanca” (White March) of cross-country skiing, the ice-sculpture contest and the National Party of the “Noche más Larga” (Longest Night), every 20 th June, when the winter season is inaugurated with the descent of the skiers from Glacier Martial, lighting the way as they slide through the snow-covered gorges.
